Implementation Support and Supervision Mission of Kayonza Irrigation and Integrated Watershed management Project Team visited KAYONZA District

The project's overall goal is to contribute to poverty reduction in the drought-prone Eastern Province of Rwanda specifically in Kayonza District. The development objective is to sustainably improve the food security and income of 50,000 rural households and boost their climate resilience
KIIWP I aims to contribute to drought resilience by supplying water for livestock and domestic use in Kayonza District. The development of solar-powered boreholes is one of the solutions to providing water to farmers far from any other alternative water source. With KIIWP I, 20 solar-powered boreholes are targeted in four (4) livestock farming sectors of Kayonza, namely Murundi, Gahini, Mwili, and Ndego, and their implementation is done through a partnership agreement between RAB/SPIU-IFAD on behalf of KIIWP
May 17th ,2023 Mayor Nyemazi John received a delegation from #IFAD implementation support and supervision mission along with #SPIU team from RBA. The discussions focused on the impact of phase I of #KIIWP - Kayonza Integrated Irrigation Watershed Management Project, they discussed on the achievement Where ten (10) borehole projects were finally handed over to the community, as follows: Buhabwa, Gakoma I, Gakoma II, Mucucu I sites of Murundi sector, Kiyanja site of Gahini sector, Rugeyo-ku Gikumba, Sabasengo, Rwisirabo II sites of Mwili sector, Kagese and Kumunini sites of Ndego sector, and six (6) borehole projects were provisionally handed over to the community as follows: Gakoma II and Mucucu II sites of Murundi sector; Burembo site of Gahini sector; Kigarama, Bikoki, and Rugeyo-ku mudugudu sites of Mwili sector, organized according to specific sites

This is being achieved by constructing water dams/tanks, solar powered boreholes in addition to install the most appropriate irrigation system under croplands area & fight drought effects ,During the 2022–2023 FY, KIIWP2 is targeting to treat 350 ha of land with land husbandry techniques, with 1950 ha to be treated with terraces and 2000 ha to be planted with forest trees.
