Kayonza Welcomes First-Ever Electric Bus, Ushering in a New Era of Clean Transport

In a groundbreaking step toward a greener and more modern transport future, Kayonza District has officially received its first electric bus, launched by Stella Express Ltd in collaboration with BasiGo Rwanda.

The electric bus, which will operate along the busy Kigali–Kayonza route, was unveiled yesterday at the Kayonza Bus Park in a ceremony attended by local leaders, transport stakeholders, and members of the community. This historic event marks the beginning of electric mobility in the Eastern Province, placing Kayonza at the forefront of Rwanda’s clean energy transition in public transport.

"This is a transformative moment for Kayonza,” said Kassim Ndungutse, Managing Director of Stella Express. “We are proud to pioneer electric mobility in the Eastern Province and reaffirm our commitment to providing modern, eco-friendly, and a service that puts passengers first."

BasiGo Rwanda’s Managing Director, Doreen Orishaba, echoed the sentiment: “This launch is proof that the electric mobility revolution is scaling Nationwide. From Kigali to Kayonza, our mission is to deliver affordable, inclusive, and climate-friendly transport to every corner of Rwanda.”

The new electric buses are designed with passenger comfort and accessibility in mind. They include wheelchair ramps, onboard Wi-Fi, USB charging ports, and low-noise operation. Powered by renewable energy and supported by BasiGo’s expanding fast-charging network, the buses offer zero-emission travel at reduced operating costs.

This development is part of Phase I of BasiGo’s upcountry expansion following successful deployments in Muhanga District in the Southern Province. It supports Rwanda’s National Strategy for Transformation (NST1 and NST2) goals, by contributing to environmental sustainability, local job creation, and improved public services.

The Kayonza District leadership applauds this milestone, which not only enhances mobility but also represents a meaningful step toward the district’s vision of becoming a smart and sustainable hub in Eastern Rwanda.

As BasiGo aims to have 1,000 electric buses on East African roads by 2027, Kayonza is proud to be an early part of this regional transformation.
